Impressionism

South-East, Impressionism, uses visible, energetic brushstrokes and a wide range of colors to capture everyday life, with subject matter drawn from nature and lived experience. Within this direction are substyles including Post-Impressionism, American Impressionism, and Fauvism-inspired work. Impressionism sits closely between Realism and Expressionism: like Realism, it remains grounded in recognizable subject matter, but uses looser lines and brushwork, often requiring the viewer to step back to see the larger picture. Compared with Expressionism, Impressionism tends toward softer palettes, pastels, and slight variations of naturally occurring colors, while Expressionism uses bolder, more exaggerated color and greater distortion of the subject.

Pup captures an intimate moment between Mitch’s childhood dog, Sir Francis Von-Wiggle-Butt, and the familiar garden he loved. Painted shortly after Francis’s passing, the work preserves a memory of him while he was still part of the everyday landscape of home.
Hidden within the upper portion of the painting, Cheddar—the cat Francis often chased—wanders into the frame. Their peaceful proximity was unusual, making the moment feel almost accidental. The painting is as much about what remains after loss as it is about the dog himself. What brothers will we miss when they no longer brother us?

Daily was painted for the people who bike in and out of Portland every day—the commuters, those who pelt in the rain and the shine, preferring two wheels over four. In the landscape of city of bridges, known for their love of bikes, the model ,the artist’s brother, trucks up hill on N Greenly leaving the Steel Bridge in the distance. With each, step, decision, and daily habit we make; we walk the mile of who we are.

Bell Road (SOLD)

Bell Road depicts a familiar stretch of road outside Newberg, Oregon—one that holds both some of Mitch’s sweetest memories and some of her more bitter ones. The rolling fields and hills became a reflection of that contradiction: beautiful and difficult, sometimes within the same view.
The road continues toward the horizon beneath a setting sun, a reminder that neither the sweetness nor the bitterness stays forever. Like the sunset, everything passes.

Sitting in Spring

Painted from a live model, Sitting in Spring tries to savor the fleeting warmth of early spring sunlight, like the kind that can turn into April showers in a blink of an eye. Mitch uses a palette of soft purples, yellows, pinks, blues, and greens, reminiscent of Easter colors, to capture that strange in-between feeling of spring. The woman sits quietly in the sunlight coming through the window, but the colors don't stay outside. The light seems to breathe in through the window and exhale onto her clothes, surrounding her in the feeling of the season. Sometimes our feelings are brighter than our sight.

Boyfriends

The artist’s two roommates melt into one another as they often do. Chuck and Ollie are frequently mistaken for brothers, but their relationship seems to model something more than simply coexisting. They share the couch, the warmth, the space, and apparently very little concern for personal boundaries. In this moment, the two become almost indistinguishable from one another, curled together in a way that makes it difficult to tell where one cat ends and the other begins. Perhaps living together long enough teaches us that home isn't just a place we share, but a little bit of ourselves we leave in one another.

Coffee Hour

Noon.
Nothing to do but sip the day slowly,
steam curling like a cat around my mind.
Calm sips from its rim,
though caffeine should make my pulse protest.
A paradox in porcelain
peace disguised as energy.

Midnight.
Twelve tasks, twelve tabs,
one empty promise to focus.
The same handle holds humble gulps:
burnt sugar and bitten nails.
Procrastination in liquid form.
Doesn’t matter if it’s a new pot
it always tastes like the past,
like things I should have finished
when they were still warm.

My father once said coffee steadies the nerves.
I believed him.
Maybe that’s why I shake less and think more.

I’ll take twenty ounces,
leave four for room
a little space for rest,
for something I still might do tomorrow.
