North-East
Soft Lines
North-East, Soft-Line, approaches Non-Objective through its distortion of recognizable subject matter, while using soft, gestural, and often swirling lines to create the image. The original subject may still be present, but it has been pushed far enough from its natural form that the viewer may need to look more closely to recognize it. Soft-Line can overlap with Expressionism because both may distort the subject and use loose, expressive marks, but Soft-Line is defined primarily by the quality of the line rather than the emotional or psychological meaning behind the distortion. It can also move toward Non-Objective when the original subject becomes so distorted that recognition is no longer central.
