HERE, THERE, SOMEWHERE
Direction
My creative work falls under the name May Mitch, which is simply my birth name shortened. Most people call me Mitch. If you're looking for a pitch, that kinda makes me itch. This website is dominated by paintings, but my work isn't limited to one style, medium, palette, or theme. I believe in taking the picture, letting it exist, and seeing where it takes you. I've always been curious about what happens when you stop accepting something exactly as it is and start asking, what if it were like this?
Growing up, I often felt like I was taking in the world on a higher saturation setting. Everything felt bright, loud, and worth looking at. Much of my childhood was spent drawing doodles, writing wild stories, and drafting tiny homes just to keep my hands busy. Rarely was I trying to recreate what was already there. I was changing it, rearranging it, exaggerating it, asking what else it could be. Art became a way of following that curiosity, taking what was already in front of me and pushing it somewhere new.
Art is merely the way I process the world. It's how I choose to look at it, move through it, and sometimes turn it upside down. My goal is to provoke an emotion, spark a thought, or maybe switch the view if you're open to the journey. At times, I'll make art of a ditch; other times, it's made of what you ditched. I'm interested in blurring the lines between trash and class, flipping opposites until they start looking a little more yin to yang. I make formal, carefully considered art, but I'm still just a person looking at the same strange, beautiful, messy world as everyone else. I don’t make prints, and have no plans to. My hand is well trained, but scanning removes the human element from the work. I believe in making original art for original people. A copy feels like a disservice to the uniqueness of owning the piece. Some might call me a bitch, but I'm definitely not a snitch, just some witch, trying to eat the rich. Let's blur the lines we thought were black and white, zoom in, zoom out, and throw some color on it.
Define Art
Can you feel your hand
touch your other hand?
Does it feel like you're
touching--
or being touched?
Have you ever smelled air--
or only what's in it?
The salt, the smoke,
the faint trace of rain
still deciding to fall.
What's art, anyways?
When my best friend's laugh
sounds like music;
my mother's smile
looks like a masterpiece,
and this painting
feels like labor--
hands sore from loving.
Beg me this:
what isn't art?
The line between black and white.
--as life is to art--
isn't greyscale.
No monochromatic number
can measure
such a blurred line.
So what isn't art,
when life is in color
and you are the artists?
Artistic Practice
2-D
Flat paint can travel the eye quite far. The bulk of the work you see on this website may appear to be 2-D.
3-D
If you take a painting and add scaplture, we are now in 3-D. How much volume is needed on a canvas to move dimetions?
4-D
Take the sculpture canvas and add light, it gives the piece movement, airing us in 4-D.
Words
I can talk you through the walk through, but I have a few written in the chalk.
